Wichita Falls takes its name from the falls on the Wichita River, and Falls Park recreates the original cascade with a man made waterfall, trails, and picnic lawns. The city is also home to Sheppard Air Force Base, one of the largest training bases in the country, and the Wichita Theatre, a restored 1908 stage downtown, still hosts shows under its historic marquee. The Museum of North Texas History traces the region from frontier settlement to oil and ranching, and Lake Wichita offers fishing and birdwatching on the city's edge.
