Suffolk calls itself a city of wide horizons, and it earns the name. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge begins just south of town, a vast wetland of dark water, cypress, and boardwalk trails where herons and black bears still roam. Downtown, Main Street keeps its brick storefronts, the Suffolk Center for the Arts stages shows in a former high school, and Riddick's Folly House Museum, a Greek Revival home from 1837, opens a window onto the city's early wealth. Suffolk also grew rich on peanuts, and the harvest still shapes the region's farms.
