South Bend is best known for the University of Notre Dame, whose Golden Dome and Basilica of the Sacred Heart rise just north of downtown, but the city has its own river story. The St. Joseph River bends through town, and the South Bend River Lights wash the bridges in color after dark. The Studebaker National Museum honors the wagon and car company that built the city's industrial wealth, and the East Race Waterway, the first artificial whitewater course in North America, still draws kayakers downtown. The Morris Performing Arts Center anchors a lively theater district.
