Roseville grew up as a railroad town in Placer County, northeast of Sacramento, and the tracks still run through its story. The city sits where the flat Sacramento Valley meets the first rise toward the Sierra Nevada foothills, a position that made it a natural stop for trains and later for families moving out of Sacramento. Historic Old Town Roseville keeps that early character with older commercial buildings along the rail corridor, while newer neighborhoods, shopping centers, and schools have spread east and north. The Maidu Museum and Historic Site preserves the story of the region's first people, and the city keeps a busy calendar of community events downtown.
