New Bedford was once the richest whaling port in the world, and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park preserves that story in brick streets, a whaling museum, and the Seamen's Bethel chapel made famous in Moby Dick. Today the city is still a working fishing port, one of the top grossing in the country, and its waterfront hums with boats, fish markets, and gulls. Buttonwood Park Zoo gives families a green escape, and Fort Taber guards the harbor entrance where the Acushnet River meets Buzzards Bay.
