Kirkland sits on the east shore of Lake Washington, a waterfront city of marinas, parks, and a walkable downtown. Marina Park offers a beach, a boardwalk, and views across the lake to Seattle, and Juanita Beach Park gives families a sandy shore and picnic lawns. The Cross Kirkland Corridor, a rail trail on a former rail line, carries walkers and cyclists through neighborhoods and green spaces, and downtown Lake Street and Park Lane gather shops, galleries, and restaurants. The city takes its name from Peter Kirk, a steel magnate who dreamed of a Pittsburgh of the West here in the 1880s.
