Joliet sits southwest of Chicago on the Des Plaines River, a city built from limestone, canals, and highways. The Illinois and Michigan Canal once linked the Great Lakes to the Mississippi through here, and Joliet limestone, quarried locally, went into many historic Chicago buildings, earning the city the nickname City of Stone. Historic Route 66 runs through downtown, and the Rialto Square Theatre, a restored 1920s movie palace, anchors the theater district. The Joliet Area Historical Museum tells the story of the canal, the quarries, and the road that carried travelers west.
