Fort Myers grew from a Civil War era fort on the Caloosahatchee River into a winter home for inventors. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates preserve Thomas Edison's laboratory and Henry Ford's bungalow beside a giant banyan tree, one of the largest in the country. Downtown's River District keeps brick streets, a farmers market, and the historic Arcade Theatre, and the riverfront offers sunset views across the Caloosahatchee. Manatee Park, a warm water refuge in winter, draws manatees and the visitors who love them.
