El Cajon takes its name from the Spanish phrase for the box, a nod to the valley ringed by mountains east of San Diego. The Olaf Wieghorst Museum honors the Western artist who painted the desert and its people, and downtown Main Street keeps a small town rhythm with shops, cafes, and a weekly farmers market. Parkway Plaza draws shoppers from across East County, and the surrounding hills offer trails with views back across the valley. El Cajon grew from citrus and raisin groves into a diverse suburban city.
