Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee River in west Georgia, a mill city turned riverfront town. The RiverWalk runs along the water with paths for walking and biking, and the river itself carries one of the longest urban whitewater runs in the country, drawing rafters through the heart of downtown. The National Infantry Museum, just south of the city at Fort Moore, tells the story of the American soldier with galleries and memorials. Uptown Columbus keeps brick warehouses, a Springer Opera House that dates to the 1800s, and the Columbus Museum with art and regional history.
