Columbia is a college city in central Missouri, home to the University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College. The Missouri Theatre, a restored 1928 movie palace downtown, now hosts concerts and performances, and the downtown district, known as The District, offers shops, restaurants, and galleries. Shelter Gardens, a public garden maintained by the city, gives visitors a quiet place among flowers and trees. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, just south of the city, has caves, a natural rock bridge, and trails through forest and prairie.
