Chesapeake sits in southeastern Virginia, between Norfolk and the North Carolina line, and its natural landmark is the Great Dismal Swamp. Lake Drummond, a round lake inside the swamp, reflects cypress trees and draws paddlers and birdwatchers. The Dismal Swamp Canal, one of the oldest continually operating man-made canals in the country, runs along the city's eastern edge. The Chesapeake Arboretum and Northwest River Park give residents trails, gardens, and river access.
