Aurora sits on the Fox River in northeast Illinois, the state's second-largest city and a former railroad and manufacturing center. The city grew around mills and rail yards, and its downtown keeps a historic theater district along the river. The Paramount Theatre, a restored 1930s movie palace, hosts Broadway shows and concerts in the heart of town. RiverEdge Park offers summer concerts on the Fox, and the Aurora Regional Fire Museum and SciTech Hands-On Museum give families downtown stops. Stolp Island, in the middle of the river, holds the city's oldest downtown blocks.
