Amarillo sits on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, where Route 66 runs through the city and the sky seems to go on without end. The city grew as a cattle and railroad center, and that ranching past still shows in its stockyards, western shops, and wide streets. West of town, Cadillac Ranch plants ten classic cars nose down in a field, an art installation that has become one of the most photographed stops on Route 66. To the south, Palo Duro Canyon cuts a deep red gash through the plains, with trails, rock formations, and a summer musical drama performed in the canyon amphitheater.
