Alexandria sits on the Potomac River just south of Washington, with Old Town streets that still follow a colonial plan. King Street runs from the river west through blocks of brick row houses, shops, and restaurants, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center fills a former munitions plant with working artists' studios. Founded in 1749, the city counted George Washington among its early citizens, and Christ Church and other historic sites keep that era close. The waterfront, once a busy port, now draws walkers, diners, and visitors to the river's edge.
