Albany is one of the oldest cities in the nation, settled by the Dutch as Fort Orange in 1624 and later the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal. The New York State Capitol, a Romanesque pile with the famous Million Dollar Staircase, anchors downtown, and the Empire State Plaza gathers state museums and offices around reflecting pools. Washington Park, designed in the spirit of the great urban parks, bursts with tulips each spring during the Tulip Festival, and the USS Slater, a destroyer escort turned museum ship, rests on the Hudson River.
