Akron sits in northeast Ohio, south of Cleveland, a city built on rubber and remade around universities, arts, and the Cuyahoga Valley. The tire industry made Goodyear and Firestone household names here, and the Rubber City nickname still fits a town that made its living on the road. The University of Akron anchors downtown, and Stan Hywet Hall, the estate of a Goodyear founder, offers gardens and a grand manor house. Just north, Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers waterfalls, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, and miles of forested valley.
